The Cultural Diary project was created with the aim of providing cultural education for primary school pupils. It brings together all types of cultural productions offered by various cultural institutions and organisations in Maribor into a unified and comprehensive subscription-based programme, collected in a programme booklet called Cultural Diary.
The Cultural Diary organises visits to and viewings of various concerts, theatre, puppet, dance, and film performances, as well as visits to and creative activities in galleries, libraries, museums, the archive, and more. Each event is rounded off with environmentally oriented creative workshops, where pupils can also try their hand at being creators themselves. More about the project can be found here.
The Regional Archives Maribor has been participating in the project since 2017. So far, we have presented the following topics to pupils:
- 2017 – Rudolf Maister in archival records
- 2018 – Guilds
- 2019 – Old postcards and photographs of Maribor
- 2020 – Guilds
- 2023 – Books in the archive
- 2024 – Rudolf Maister
- 2025 – Archival photographs
- 2026 – Letters and postcards from the past
In 2026, we prepared workshops for the Cultural Diary on the theme Letters and Postcards from the Past.
Pupils will learn about how the archive operates, with a special focus on old postcards and letters. In the exhibition space, they will see how people in the past wrote letters and postcards. They will view old postcards of Maribor and try to guess which parts of the city they depict. They will also become familiar with the archival reading room and the process of ordering and using archival materials, and they will tour the archival storage areas. In the conservation workshop, they will learn about the processes of conserving and repairing damaged old paper. At the end of the visit, they will take part in the creative workshop Leap into the Future, during which they will write and send letters to the future.
